Both to settle her nerves, warm her to her ~~duty, always her duty~~ instructions and numb her to the concerns simmering low, low within her. [their tiers are no different than filling the empty slots the commune left behind. they have different jobs and they aren't marked (or marking) each other for a false sense of security. necessity. these jobs are a necessity too, this time with a slapdash label and a petty audience. mithra is lucky in the sense august doesn't check his phone, leaving it behind most days and barely checking it on the off chance he's kept it on his person.

he is blissfully unaware of most voyeur requests, likely having missed a few already, and mithra's invitation is a reprieve between the jobs he's working. it's an excuse to get to know her outside of the working environment, and he had promised to help her with her abilities– maybe she's inquiring about them. august's eyes are sharp, however, and while he may not be catching why she's nervous, he clocks that she is.

the vin mariani is a taste he's only experienced once, having crept into his father's cellar for a swig when he was twelve. he hated it then, but watching mithra drink in the deep colored wine so smoothly convinces him the taste hadn't been acquired yet.]

[ A mercy, that she arrived after the commune's fall. It would have been a place of comfort for her, a too-familiar environment that would have driven her madness to heights unseen before — made her a creature of the Shepherd, with all the longing she has within her to be told where her place is. How she is to be, now that she has fled from the ribbons and chains that once bound and led her like a sweet, obedient little hound.
